The Melbourne shortlist · Home & outdoors

10 best tree removal companies
in Melbourne.

Tree removal is skilled, risky work, and many Melbourne councils require a permit before certain trees come down. This guide compares Melbourne tree removal companies on qualifications, insurance, documented work and independent reviews.

By James Richardson Published Last checked Method v1 20 businesses considered
Our two cents

Qualifications and insurance decide it.

For large, complex or valuable trees, The Tree Company and Tree Response have the deepest documented expertise: named, university-trained arborists and published project work. Trav’s Tree Services and Redback Tree Services are the clearest on price, with published guides and hundreds of strong Google reviews.

Jim’s Trees, our featured placement, has the largest review base and a published average price, but the work is done by local franchisees whose qualifications are not published. Whoever you call, ask for the arborist’s qualification, a current certificate of currency and a written quote that covers stumps, green waste and permits.

01 / Best suited to routine jobs needing quick quotes

Jim's Trees

Featured · Optimising clientEvidence confidence: ModerateLast checked 28 October 2026 · Desk research

Disclosure: Jim's Trees is a client of Optimising, the agency founded by our publisher, James Richardson. It holds position 1 as a featured placement. Its score comes from the same rubric and the same kind of evidence as every other business in this guide.

Our two cents

Jim's Trees is a franchise network offering tree removal, pruning and stump grinding across Melbourne. Its Melbourne Google listing shows 4.8 stars from 345 reviews, and its national ProductReview listing shows 4.9 from 792. The network publishes $10 million insurance, free quotes and an $800 to $1,200 average removal figure. It suits households wanting a quick quote for routine work. The main caveat: each job is done by a local franchisee, so ask that operator for their own arborist qualifications and insurance certificate.

Why it makes the list

  • Melbourne Google listing rated 4.8 from 345 reviews [google.com]
  • National ProductReview listing rated 4.9 from 792 reviews, 98% positive [productreview.com.au]
  • Publishes an indicative Melbourne removal range of $800 to $1,200 and offers free, no-obligation quotes [jimstrees.com.au]
  • 24/7 customer line (131 546) and a published permit guide with arborist report help [jimstrees.com.au]

What to consider

  • Work is done by independent local franchisees, so quality, qualifications and equipment can vary; the network does not publish AQF levels for its Melbourne arborists.
  • Published insurance is $10 million, lower than the $20 million public liability several Melbourne competitors state.
  • No case studies or named Melbourne projects to judge past work.
  • Complaints process is a single email address with no published timeframe or escalation path, and no customer guarantee was found on the pages loaded.
  • Site figures are inconsistent (10,000+ five-star reviews vs 772+ ProductReview reviews; about 4,000 vs almost 5,700 franchisees).
  • Not verified: AQF qualifications of Melbourne franchisees, Current certificate of currency, Number of Melbourne tree franchisees, Arboriculture Australia or VTIO membership, Any written customer guarantee, SWMS and WorkSafe practices, Jim's Trees founding year.

It handles removals, pruning, bracing, planting and habitat work, names clients such as Parks Victoria and VicRoads, and is a gold sponsor of the Victorian Tree Industry Organisation. It suits complex, commercial or high-value trees. Its Google rating of 4.7 from 110 reviews trails some peers, and it publishes no pricing.

What to consider

  • No published pricing or statement that quotes are free.
  • Google rating of 4.7 is lower than several smaller competitors.
  • Individual qualifications are listed only for the founder; quoting and crew arborists have no stated qualification levels.

03 / Best suited to homeowners wanting upfront price guides

Trav's Tree Services

Evidence confidence: HighLast checked 28 October 2026 · Desk research

Our two cents

Trav's Tree Services is a Preston-based arborist business doing tree removal, pruning, stump grinding and arborist reports across Melbourne, with a Google rating of 4.9 from 335 reviews. It publishes price guides for removals and reports, lists $20 million public liability and $5 million professional indemnity cover, and names DHHS and Boroondara Council work. It suits homeowners who want indicative costs before a site visit. Note the removal price guide dates from 2021, and ask which arborist holds the AQF Level 5 qualification.

Why it makes the list

  • Google rating of 4.9 from 335 reviews [google.com]
  • Publishes arborist report prices by number of trees and a 5 business day turnaround [travstrees.com.au]
  • Documents $20 million public liability and $5 million professional indemnity cover with certificates listed [travstrees.com.au]
  • Named government work for DHHS rental properties over more than 5 years [travstrees.com.au]

What to consider

  • The removal price guide is dated August 2021, so current quotes may differ.
  • The AQF Level 5 claim is not tied to a named arborist; ask who will write any report.
  • Its permit page links to a Canadian (Victoria, BC) bylaw rather than a Victorian council law, so rely on your council's own permit page.
  • Insurance documents listed are 2024 versions; ask for current certificates.
  • Not verified: Individual staff AQF qualifications, Current certificates of currency, ISA, VTIO or Arboriculture Australia membership, 2010 founding year (ABR shows the company from October 2012).

Before you hire

Before you request a quote.

  • Check your council's rules before any tree comes down: Boroondara's Tree Protection Local Law 2024, for example, needs a permit for any tree with a trunk circumference of 110 cm or more at 1.4 m, even if it is dead, and Casey requires a planning permit for larger canopy trees or land under certain overlays. Ask the arborist who checks this and who lodges the application.
  • Ask for the qualification of the person doing the work: Certificate III in Arboriculture (AQF Level 3) is the usual baseline for climbing and removal crews, and council-facing arborist reports are usually written by an AQF Level 5 consulting arborist.
  • Ask for a current certificate of currency for public liability and check the insured name matches the business quoting you; several Melbourne operators still publish certificates that expired in 2025.
  • Get a written quote that lists what is included: stump grinding and depth, green waste and mulch removal, clean-up, crane or traffic management, and any arborist report or permit fees.
  • If the tree is near power lines, ask whether the crew holds the electrical line clearance tickets required in Victoria or whether the distributor needs to be contacted first.
  • With a franchise network, the quote and the work come from a local franchisee, so check that operator's own reviews, qualifications and insurance rather than relying on network-wide figures.
  • Be wary of offers to 'top' or heavily lop a healthy tree; pruning should follow AS 4373 (Pruning of amenity trees), and over-pruning can make a tree less safe and may still need a permit.

Worth knowing

An independent Melbourne cost guide puts tree removal at $260 to $840 for trees under 5 m, $840 to $2,625 for 5 to 10 m, $2,100 to $5,250 for 10 to 20 m and $4,725 to $15,750 above 20 m, with stump grinding at $160 to $945 per stump. It compiles published cost data rather than quotes, so use it as a guide only. [whatsthedamage.com.au]

Many Melbourne councils require a permit before a tree comes down. Boroondara’s Tree Protection Local Law 2024, for example, covers canopy trees with a trunk circumference of 110 cm or more at 1.4 m, including dead and weed trees, at $226.90 per tree. [boroondara.vic.gov.au]

Casey requires a planning permit where overlays apply or where a canopy tree is over 5 m tall, has a canopy over 4 m wide or a trunk over 0.5 m around at 1.4 m, with exemptions for immediate risk. [casey.vic.gov.au]

The Victorian Tree Industry Organisation publishes no member directory, only a sponsor list, and on 28 October 2026 Arboriculture Australia’s public directory listed none of the ten businesses here as Registered Members. Treat membership logos on business websites as claims. [vtio.org.au]

Behind the score

  • 25Expertise and capability

  • 15Transparency
  • 15Professional standards

We considered 20 Melbourne tree removal and arborist businesses found through search results, Google Maps, review platforms and the Victorian Tree Industry Organisation’s sponsor list. Nine were chosen on the strength of their published evidence; Jim’s Trees is included as our disclosed featured placement. Several businesses with strong Google ratings were left out because they publish too little to assess.

Each pillar is rated 0 to 5 against published anchors and weighted to 100. Unknown evidence is recorded as “not verified”, never as zero. Evidence confidence is separate from the score: High means several independent sources, checked recently, cover most pillars. Moderate means mostly the business’s own published claims, with some independent checks.
