The Melbourne shortlist · Home & outdoors

9 best skip bin companies
in Melbourne.

The cheapest skip bin isn’t always the cheapest once excess weight, extra days and banned items are added. This guide compares Melbourne skip bin companies on published prices, fees, what they accept and what their customers say.

By James Richardson Published Last checked Method v1 23 businesses considered
Our two cents

Published prices and permits decide it.

GT Skips scores highest, with all-inclusive online prices, a choice of hire lengths and strong Google reviews. Unlimited Bins and ASAP Bin Hire publish full price tables, Mobile Skips is the easy option for small jobs that need no permit, and Kartaway and BINGO Industries suit big or heavy builder waste.

Jim’s Skip Bins, our featured placement, has a written work guarantee and arranges council permits, but publishes no prices or standard hire length, so get both in writing. With any company, ask about excess weight charges before you fill the bin.

01 / Best suited to households wanting guaranteed, flexible hire

Jim's Skip Bins

Featured · Optimising clientEvidence confidence: ModerateLast checked 28 October 2026 · Desk research

Disclosure: Jim's Skip Bins is a client of Optimising, the agency founded by our publisher, James Richardson. It holds position 1 as a featured placement. Its score comes from the same rubric and the same kind of evidence as every other business in this guide.

Our two cents

Jim's Skip Bins is a franchise skip hire network covering Melbourne and regional Victoria, with bins from 2m³ to 12m³, permit arrangement and a written work guarantee. Its Melbourne Google listing shows 4.8 from 214 reviews. It suits households and small builders who value flexible hire periods and a guarantee backed by a national group. The main caveat is that no prices are published and service varies by franchisee, so get a written quote that states the hire length and any excess fees.

Why it makes the list

  • Google shows 4.8 from 214 reviews on the Jim's Skip Bins Melbourne listing. [google.com]
  • Jim's Group Work Guarantee: an independent expert assesses disputed jobs at Jim's expense, and advance payments are refunded if problems are not fixed within two weeks. [jimsskipbins.com.au]
  • Will arrange the council permit when the bin must go on the street or nature strip. [jimsskipbins.com.au]
  • Flexible hire periods and same-day delivery in most Melbourne areas for early bookings (business claim). [jimsskipbins.com.au]

What to consider

  • No prices are published, so you cannot compare costs without requesting a quote.
  • Service is delivered by local franchisees and quality varies: a Google review reports a Cranbourne franchisee's driver damaging a gate, and ProductReview has complaints about quote requests that were never returned.
  • The standard hire period, extension fee and extra disposal charges are not quantified on the site.
  • No recycling rate, EPA permissions, insurance amount or industry membership is published.
  • Stated hours are inconsistent: the Melbourne page says 24 hours, 7 days, while the Victoria page and Google show 7am to 8pm weekdays and 8am to 4pm weekends.
  • Not verified: Actual Melbourne prices, Standard hire period length, Excess weight or extra disposal fees, Public liability insurance and amount, EPA Victoria permissions, Recycling or landfill diversion rate, Industry memberships, Which franchisee services a given suburb.

02 / Best suited to northern suburbs renovations and clean-outs

GT Skips

Evidence confidence: ModerateLast checked 28 October 2026 · Desk research

Our two cents

GT Skips is a family-owned skip bin hire operator based in Campbellfield with its own transfer station and recycling yard, serving Melbourne with bins from 1.5m³ to 33m³. Google shows 4.9 from 256 reviews, and the site gives live prices that include delivery, collection and tipping, with 3 to 30 day hire options. It suits households and builders in the north who want an upfront price. The caveat is that overweight charges are not quantified online.

Why it makes the list

  • Google shows 4.9 from 256 reviews. [google.com]
  • Prices include delivery, hire, collection and tipping; extras are limited to permits and overweight charges. [gtskips.com.au]
  • Choice of 3, 7, 14 or 30 day hire, with extensions by phone. [gtskips.com.au]
  • Own transfer station and recycling yard in Campbellfield. [gtskips.com.au]

What to consider

  • Overweight charges and permit costs are not quantified on the site.
  • Next-day delivery is standard; same-day depends on availability (book before 11am).
  • Closed Sundays and Saturday afternoons per its Google hours.
  • No recycling rate, EPA permission or insurance details published.

03 / Best suited to small clean-outs without a permit

Mobile Skips

Evidence confidence: HighLast checked 28 October 2026 · Desk research

Our two cents

Mobile Skips hires out 4m³ lidded, lockable skips on registered trailers across Melbourne through local franchisees, so the bin can sit in a parking spot without a council permit. Its Melbourne ProductReview listing shows 5.0 from 2,451 reviews. It suits apartment dwellers and households doing a light clean-out who want a fixed online price. The main caveat is the weight cap of 500kg or 1,000kg: one reviewer paid about $300 extra for an overweight load.

Why it makes the list

What to consider

  • Only one size (4m³) with a 500kg or 1,000kg limit, which suits light loads rather than soil, concrete or large renovations.
  • Excess weight is charged but the rate is not published; a ProductReview reviewer reported about $300 extra for an 800kg overload.
  • Run by franchise owner-operators, so service can vary by area.
  • The hirer is strictly liable for damage and loss under the terms, including $2,000 plus GST if the skip is stolen.
  • Not verified: Melbourne prices, Excess weight rate, Public liability insurance and amount, EPA Victoria permissions of the receiving facilities, Recycling or landfill diversion rate.

04 / Best suited to budget-conscious northern suburbs jobs

Unlimited Bins

Evidence confidence: ModerateLast checked 28 October 2026 · Desk research

Our two cents

Unlimited Bins is a skip bin hire operator with a yard in Coburg North, serving most of Melbourne with bins from 2m³ to 12m³ and optional mini excavator and Dingo hire. Google shows 4.9 from 180 reviews, and it publishes from-prices, such as $470 for a 4m³ bin including GST, with a standard 7-day hire. It suits households and landscapers who want to compare prices before calling. The caveat is that prices rise for heavy waste and weight.

Why it makes the list

What to consider

  • Listed prices are from-prices; heavy waste and weight change the final cost and excess rates are not published.
  • Business details are thin: no founding year, ABN or insurance shown on the site.
  • Recycling claim of up to 85% is not independently verified.
  • Not verified: Founding year, Excess weight charges, Recycling rate, Insurance and amount, EPA permissions of the sorting facilities, Whether Unlimited Bins and Spartan Bins share ownership.

=05 / Best suited to fast online booking, big fleet

BINGO Industries

Evidence confidence: ModerateLast checked 28 October 2026 · Desk research

Our two cents

BINGO Industries is a large waste and skip bin hire company that has operated in Melbourne since 2017, with recycling centres in West Melbourne and Braeside. It offers online booking by postcode, same-day delivery for weekday orders before 10am, and organises council permits in Victoria. It suits buyers who want quick online booking from a big fleet. The caveat is mixed independent feedback: ProductReview shows 1.5 from 20 national reviews, mostly commercial complaints.

Why it makes the list

What to consider

  • ProductReview shows 1.5 from 20 national reviews, citing missed pickups, invoicing problems and an overweight load being dumped on a driveway.
  • No Melbourne price list; you must use the booking tool.
  • Recycling figures published are national or for its NSW facility, not Melbourne.
  • Not verified: Melbourne prices, Skip-hire-specific Google rating for Melbourne, EPA Victoria permissions for Melbourne sites, Melbourne recycling rate, Insurance and amount.

=05 / Best suited to large or heavy construction waste

Kartaway

Evidence confidence: HighLast checked 28 October 2026 · Desk research

Our two cents

Kartaway is a family-owned skip bin hire company that has operated in Victoria since 1977, running its own public transfer station in East Brunswick, which the City of Yarra lists for residents. It offers skips and walk-in bins from 2m³ to 31m³, with an instant online price for hire of up to 7 days. It suits builders and large clean-ups needing big or heavy bins. The caveat is a lower Google score of 4.1 from 71 reviews.

Why it makes the list

  • Operating as a Victorian skip and bin specialist since 1977, per its company history. [kartaway.com.au]
  • Its East Brunswick Public Transfer Station is listed by the City of Yarra. [yarracity.vic.gov.au]
  • Wide size range up to 31m³ walk-in bins, with instant online pricing including GST. [kartaway.com.au]
  • FAQ spells out surcharged items (mattresses, tyres, stumps) and refused items (asbestos, contaminated soil, gas bottles, chemicals, liquids). [kartaway.com.au]

What to consider

  • Google rating of 4.1 from 71 reviews is lower than most operators in this guide.
  • No Sunday delivery or collection.
  • The 'no excess weight fee' offer is subject to terms, and weight limits vary by bin.
  • Card payment is taken by phone.
  • Not verified: EPA Victoria permission for the East Brunswick transfer station, Green Star claim, Recycling or landfill diversion rate, Insurance and amount, Current Melbourne prices beyond the 'from $340' metadata.

07 / Best suited to outer east, permits handled

WM Waste Management Services

Evidence confidence: ModerateLast checked 28 October 2026 · Desk research

Our two cents

WM Waste Management Services is a Boronia-based skip bin hire and recycling business established in 1985 that also runs transfer facilities in the outer east. It offers skips and walk-in bins up to 23m³ and lodges council permits directly, claiming accreditation with more than 20 Melbourne councils. It suits outer east and Yarra Ranges households wanting permits handled. The caveat is a weak Google score of 3.2 from 27 reviews, partly from its council hard-rubbish work.

Why it makes the list

  • Lodges council permits directly, typically 1 to 3 business days before delivery, and will not place bins on public land without one. [wmwaste.com.au]
  • Operating since 1985 and runs recycling and transfer facilities in Knox and the Yarra Ranges (business claim). [wmwaste.com.au]
  • Reduced rates for clean concrete or soil bins. [wmwaste.com.au]

What to consider

  • Google shows 3.2 from 27 reviews, including complaints about callbacks.
  • No price table published.
  • Staff numbers differ between pages (about 50 versus about 100), and ISO and accreditation claims are not independently verified.
  • Not verified: ISO certifications, Tyre Stewardship accreditation, Council accreditation list, EPA permissions, Insurance and amount, Prices.

08 / Best suited to driveway clean-outs on a budget

Spartan Bins

Evidence confidence: ModerateLast checked 28 October 2026 · Desk research

Our two cents

Spartan Bins is a family-run skip bin hire business in Campbellfield serving Melbourne's northern and western suburbs, with published prices from $250 for a 2.5m³ bin and a 1-tonne weight allowance included in each hire. Google shows 4.4 from 92 reviews. It suits households with room on their driveway who want a low, visible price. The caveat is that it does not arrange council permits, so bins must stay within your property boundary.

Why it makes the list

What to consider

  • Does not provide council permits; bins can only go on your driveway or within your property boundary.
  • Largest bin is 9m³, and heavier waste is priced per tonne.
  • ProductReview shows 3.9 from only 8 reviews, and some Google reviews are strongly negative.

09 / Best suited to eastern suburbs price-checkers

ASAP Bin Hire

Evidence confidence: ModerateLast checked 28 October 2026 · Desk research

Our two cents

ASAP Bin Hire is an eastern suburbs skip bin hire company based in Kilsyth that publishes one of the clearest price tables in Melbourne, from $290 for a 2m³ general waste bin to $1,050 for 12m³. Google shows 4.5 from 103 reviews, with comments on fair pricing and punctual delivery. It suits households in the outer east who want to know the cost before calling. The caveat is that hire length and overweight rules are not published.

Why it makes the list

What to consider

  • Prices are labelled indicative; hire length and overweight charges are not stated.
  • Website and Google show different addresses (Dandenong South on the site, Kilsyth on Google).
  • No information on recycling, insurance or prohibited items on the pages loaded.

Before you hire

Before you book a bin.

  • Ask what the quote includes in writing: the number of hire days, delivery and collection, tipping and landfill levy, and the weight allowance. Operators here range from a 500kg cap (Mobile Skips standard) to a 1-tonne allowance (Spartan Bins) to quotes that vary by waste type and weight.
  • Get the excess weight rate before you book. Several operators charge for overweight loads without publishing the rate, and overweight disputes are a common theme in negative reviews.
  • If the bin cannot go on your driveway, confirm who applies for the council permit and what it costs. In the City of Melbourne the skip company must apply, with a $102.50 application fee plus $102.50 per parking bay per day; Port Phillip charges $40 plus $40 per day. Some operators, such as Spartan Bins, do not arrange permits at all.
  • Book the right waste type. Soil, concrete and bricks in a general bin usually attract surcharges, and asbestos, chemicals, paint, gas bottles and food are refused by every operator in this guide. Tyres and mattresses usually cost extra.
  • If your home was built before 1990 and you are renovating, check for asbestos first and arrange a licensed removalist, because no skip bin company here will take it.
  • Ask how the truck will protect your driveway, gates and fences, and who pays if something is damaged. Damage disputes appear in reviews for several operators, including franchisees.
  • With franchise networks such as Jim's Skip Bins and Mobile Skips, ask which local owner-operator will service your address and read the reviews that mention them.

Worth knowing

hipages’ 2026 national cost guide puts a 2m³ skip at $200 to $345, 4m³ at $400 to $520, 6m³ at $600 to $760, 9m³ at $700 to $930 and 12m³ at $1,200 to $1,550. Published Melbourne prices in this guide sit in a similar or slightly lower band. Heavy waste and excess weight push prices up. [hipages.com.au]

In the City of Melbourne, a skip on the road needs a permit issued to the skip company, which must hold at least $20 million public liability insurance. Fees are $102.50 per application plus $102.50 per parking bay per day, and bins can only be placed or collected 7am to 7pm on weekdays and 8am to 3pm on Saturdays. [melbourne.vic.gov.au]

The City of Port Phillip only accepts permit applications from registered skip suppliers, charges $40 plus $40 per day, and requires bins to sit in the parking lane, clear of nature strips. Other councils differ, so ask who handles the permit. [portphillip.vic.gov.au]

We could not independently verify any operator’s EPA Victoria permissions, insurance certificate or industry membership, and every recycling percentage in this guide is the business’s own claim.

Behind the score

Same framework. Relevant evidence.

  • 25Expertise and capability

  • 20Customer experience
  • 15Transparency
  • 15Professional standards

We considered 23 Melbourne skip bin businesses. Comparison and booking sites that resell other operators’ bins were excluded. Eight competitors were chosen on the strength of their published evidence, and one more was assessed but left out because it publishes too little to score. Jim’s Skip Bins is included as our disclosed featured placement.

Each pillar is rated 0 to 5 against published anchors and weighted to 100. Unknown evidence is recorded as “not verified”, never as zero. Evidence confidence is separate from the score: High means several independent sources, checked recently, cover most pillars. Moderate means mostly the business’s own published claims, with some independent checks.
